How to grow a broiler of 3-4 kg from a chicken in two months?
My passion for poultry began in childhood. Somehow my mother and I were unable to get past a man selling chickens, bought two pussies. Over time, 2 hens grew out of them ... When I already started a family, I decided to raise broiler chickens. And since the children and I lived in the village in the summer, I was interested in catching a bird before the fall - before returning to the city. It turned out that broiler breeding is a very profitable activity. But the speed of turning small chicks into large chickens and males, ready to eat, is worth it. I will share my experience in broiler breeding in this article.
What breed of broiler to choose?
Previously, we went for chickens at VDNH (I live in Moscow), where it was possible to purchase excellent broilers. Now everything is simpler - you can buy chickens of the desired breed by an ad on the Internet, asking in the search for your area. Yes, and in the markets of small towns, I think in the spring you can buy broiler chickens, because today it is a very popular area of poultry farming.
Broilers are also called crosses. These are hybrids of chickens that intensively build up mass. Therefore, it is not surprising that in 2-3 months an adult bird weighing 3-4 kg grows out of a chicken, no.
Here are some modern hybrids of broiler chickens I would advise you to pay attention to:
There are legends about Cobb-500 broilers. The content of such chickens is very beneficial - after a month and a half you can get a bird weighing about 3 kg!
In addition, poultry of this breed has the following advantages:
- has a calm character;
- under good conditions, it is almost not sick;
- does not require walking;
- amicably gaining weight;
- the carcass has attractive yellow skin, and a white feather when plucking does not leave dark spots on it;
- has perfectly developed legs and breast;
- It adapts well to the conditions of detention.
Broilers of this breed:
- with proper nutrition and good care, they quickly gain weight, they can gain up to 50 g of weight per day;
- quickly adapt to new conditions;
- have a well-developed breast, voluminous body;
- excellent chicken;
- very viable - on average 97% of young live.
Crosses of this breed are distinguished by a small physique, therefore they do not require a lot of space for maintenance. By purchasing representatives of this breed, you can get the final products of two types - as these are meat and egg broilers.
If you want to grow them for slaughter, then poultry at the age of two months will weigh up to 1.8 kg. If you want to get eggs, then here winged pets will not disappoint. Hens begin to rush early - at 5 months of age.
These chickens are champions in weight gain. A day they add up to 60 g, so after a month and a half such a bird will pull 2.5 kg! The meat of Ross-308 broilers is lighter than ordinary chicken and roosters, but no less tasty.
These meat-and-egg crosses also rush perfectly, are unpretentious to the living conditions, and are not picky in food.
The modern breed of crosses, which also proved to be excellent. Chicks have excellent immunity - young growth boasts 98% survival. These broilers have a powerful torso, yellow skin and white feathers. In order for a cockerel or chicken to gain 1 kg, it will take only 2 kg of feed. By two months of age, these crosses weigh about 2 kg.
The strongest chickens of this breed are able to gain up to 80 g per day. By two months, such hens already weigh 2 kg! These broilers have excellent plumage, so they can be kept in cooler chicken coops.
Conditions for keeping chickens in the first weeks
Usually broilers buy at the age of one day. Naturally, at this time they are still completely dependent on the brood hen. When we bought the first crosses, we figured out how to make them an artificial “mother”.
I took a three-liter jar and sewed “clothes” from the old woolen blanket. A rectangle of warm fabric, but with reserves, was cut in height and diameter of the can. So that the chickens would not accidentally glue the threads, I turned up the top and bottom of this model, hemmed it. It turned out a cover.
Then I cut another piece of the same size, cut it from the bottom with a fringe, not reaching the top 5 cm. The width of each strip was 2-3 cm. I scorched the edges of this blank above the flame so that little pranksters could not pull the threads out of here. Then I created two more such parts, sewed them to the top of the can. At the same time, the resulting fringe was at a distance from the shoulders of the can to the bottom.
I pour water in a jar at about +45 ° С. Naturally, the water in the bank constantly has to be changed to warm, because it will be cooled. Chickens climb here, as if under the feathers of a mother-laying hen, sorting strips of fabric with their noses in order to penetrate deeper under the wings of their makeshift parent. They are warm and comfortable. Around such a jar, about 10 sinkholes fit freely.
It is advisable to buy just so many chickens for breeding broilers if you keep them in your house or apartment for the first weeks. And if you have the opportunity to keep them immediately in the barn, then you can purchase 20 pieces. But keep in mind that you need a dry and very warm barn. Most likely, the first 3 days it will need to be heated. Litter of hay and straw is laid on the floor, and perches are made over time. But that is all later.
The most important for broiler chickens are the first three days of life. On these days, the temperature of the space surrounding them should be + 32 ... +35 ° С (for this, a “hen” jar is needed). Then the temperature is gradually reduced to normal room temperature (I replenish warm water in the jar less and less, and then completely remove the “hen”). And when the chickens are fledged, you can keep them on a glazed balcony during the day, if there the air temperature does not drop below +20 ° C.
In the early days of life, broiler chickens are constantly in the box. On the third day, newcomers can protect a part of the kitchen or shed, so that small crosses have the opportunity to stretch out during the day. At night, the chickens are again collected in a box where there is bedding, food, water.
It is important to observe the hygiene measures in the box. The feeders are suspended so that they are at the level of the heads of chickens. Then the little pranksters will not be able to spoil and trample food underfoot here.
Newspapers can be used for the bottom layer of the bedding, plain gray wrapping paper, A4 sheets or regular diapers are suitable for the top layer. As soon as the litter becomes unusable, all this needs to be minimized, thrown away, replaced with a new one.
As for the light, our chickens have enough daylight, which falls from a nearby window. But we buy them in mid-April, when daylight hours are already long enough.
If you keep chickens in a plywood box, you can attach an incandescent lamp to it, which will give the chicks both heat and light. But you need to take care of safety precautions so that inquisitive sneakers are not accidentally burned. Therefore, the lamp is suspended at a sufficient height. It is better to place it on one side of the plywood box so that the inhabitants of the "house" can move to the other if it becomes hot.
Broilers do not need night lighting - a 17-hour daylight is enough for them.
The details of feeding broiler chickens
In the first week of life, chickens need to be fed every 3 hours, including at night. To teach the kids to eat, I boil a hard-boiled egg, chop it very finely with a knife and pour it onto a flat saucer. I have some time to be a hen. With my index finger, I knock on the edge of the saucer. Chickens take this for biting. Soon they themselves begin to peck food (a cool egg and boiled millet) in this way.
Now on sale there are balanced feed, using which you can achieve intensive growth of crosses. In such a meal should be at least 20% protein. It is on special feeds that broilers will grow at an accelerated pace.
From the age of birth to a month, they are given compound feed labeled PK-5, and when the chicks turn 30 days old, they are fed PK-6 compound feed. This food is not soaked, but given dry.
It is essential that chicks always have fresh water available. Of course, little sneakers will water their paws there, try to spoil. Therefore, you can purchase special drinkers or change the water to clean in time. It is vital for them. After all, chickens not only drink, but also wash their clogged nostrils here.
For the first three days, every chicken needs to periodically check the goiter. To do this, take the bird in one hand, gently feel the goiter with the other hand. If it is not full, the chicken looks weak, it is placed in a separate box, fed in it. Another such measure will save the weakened baby from being trampled by his brothers. If he cannot eat on his own, then he is given moistened food through a pipette, mixing low-fat kefir with chopped yolk, and they are also drunk from a pipette.
Healthy babies should not be given antibiotics “just in case”. After all, we want to get healthy meat, without such additives? If broilers get sick, then these are usually non-communicable ailments. But to prevent this from happening, except for a warm "home", chickens should have a balanced meal, including:
- other plant products;
- animal supplements;
- vitamins and minerals.
In order not to cook such a mixture ourselves, it is more advisable to buy ready-made compound feeds. But, if this is not possible, from the third day chopped onions are introduced into the diet of the chickens. You can use chopped wood lice, dandelion. When the chickens turn one week old, they just hang such greens in bunches so they can peck it.
Here is the recipe for home-made feed:
- wheat - 26 g;
- barley - 16 g;
- feed fat - 6 g;
- meat and bone, fish meal, oilcake, latitudes - 34 g;
- feed yeast - 10 g;
- corn - 90 g;
- grass - 2 g;
- chalk - 2 g.
All these components are crushed, mixed in dry form and placed in feeders. When the chickens turn 3 days old, they put sand plates in the box, where wood ash, chalk, and crushed shells are added. From here, kids will be able to choose those ingredients that will help their digestion.
To prevent disease and strengthen immunity on the eighth day, each chicken should be given a drop of trivitamin.
We feed weekly chickens 7 times a day, and two weekly chickens - 6 times.
Moving chickens to the cottage
When our chickens turn 3 weeks old, they are well feathered and ready to move to nature. We load them into cardboard boxes and set off together to the village - to the cottage.
Here, my husband and I built walking for pets. The husband sharpened three wooden pegs with a height of 170 cm and drove into the ground by 30 cm so that a triangle formed. Outside is a netting. Its edges are overlapped and fastened with a piece of wire. This is necessary so that it would be possible to open the structure from this side and take our pussies to a warm chicken coop for the night before the evening dew.
When in the mornings I drive the chickens into a paddock from a netting netting, then I cover it with gauze from above. This is to ensure that birds of prey do not damage the chickens. After all, it’s impossible to be around chicks all day, and crows and kites sometimes fly over the village.
This design is good in that you can pull the slabs from the ground and transfer it to a place where grass has not yet pecked, there is no litter. By the way, it is an excellent concentrated fertilizer. You can dry the litter, harvest it for future use, then to breed it with water in a proportion of 1:20 and fertilize garden crops, fruit bushes and trees.
In an additional diet of crosses of this age (except specialized feed) we include:
- various cereals - boiled and dry;
- a crush of boiled potatoes, carrots, chopped nettles, wood lice, chopped shells;
- waste from our table.
But for broilers, you need a balanced feed with a sufficient protein content. Therefore, compound feed for crosses should be the main in their diet. After moving to the cottage (from the fourth week of life), we feed them 4-5 times a day.
When to cut broilers?
When broilers grow up, gain the necessary mass, then it is impractical to keep them, since after two months of age the weight of broilers is gaining more slowly. In our first experience of broiler breeding, we parted only with males. Chickens at the age of 5 months began to lay eggs (the breed was meat and egg). This continued until mid-November. For the winter, we gave the layers to a good friend, and the next spring they took them again. These birds supplied our family with egg products throughout the following summer. But this is a completely different story.
And meat broilers after slaughter need to be plucked. For this, carcasses are placed in hot water with a temperature of + 50 ° C. Then the feather is easier to separate. But you should not immediately cook such a bird, as it will be stiff. It is necessary to freeze it. It will be possible to feast on useful meat no earlier than in a day.
Dear readers! Cross breeding has many benefits. You can grow a bird in two summer months, which will provide the family with meat, the quality of which you will not doubt. You can breed broilers for sale, as it is profitable. After all, 1 kg of such homemade meat today costs 250 rubles.
