Partners for roses in mixborders
Mixborders are the most popular type of flower garden. Large or small narrow ribbons of mixed rabatok can be found in any garden. And if in recent years grassy perennials dictated fashion in mixborders, today roses are again returning to the peak of popularity. For mixed discounts, partners for royal princesses should be selected especially carefully.
General selection rules
Mixborders with roses are arranged in such a way as to obtain the most picturesque compositions. They are made up of the most diverse cultures, differing from each other both in the type of flowering, and in the shape and color of the foliage, and in texture and even in height. Despite the fact that each plant in such a mixed discount should be bright and self-sufficient, the main element in the composition, beautiful roses should remain the leader accent. And when choosing plants to complement the most beloved beautifully flowering stars always repelled by the garden queen herself.
In mixborders not only bush and park roses are introduced, but also standard trees, climbing species that wrap a variety of obelisks and even ground cover roses. In those mixborders where the rose is the main plant, other large shrubs or accents are not planted.
The only exceptions to this rule are:
- introduction of geometric accents for regular gardens (shorn boxwoods and yews);
- the combination of climbing roses on piers and clematis growing on obelisks into one composition as their ideal duet accompaniment;
- introduction of red-leaved shrubs for texture enrichment of mixed rabatka.
The total number of plants in a mixborder with roses of the classical type, in addition to the soloist, should not exceed 6-7 plants, while the best option is to limit yourself to 4-5 crops that will create a colorful, but harmonious and not overloaded ensemble.
Selection of partners for a rose
The selection of partners for a rose on a discount starts with possible combinations with large companion plants, after which the main texture accent is placed in the mixborder - a decorative foliage plant that ennobles the whole composition and reveals the beauty of the rose itself. Next, they select the main partners, whose roles are universal, preserving decorativeness during at least the entire active season, perennials that fill the soil and create a color and textural background for the rose.
At least one companion of a rose growing on a mixed discount should belong to the group of decorative and deciduous crops. Here, the choice is limited by the style of design and the color scheme chosen for a particular mixborder. The most fashionable partners are the red-leafed hehera, silver-leaf cleanser and wormwood, coleus, cuff, hosts, euonymus, decorative cereals, etc.
The rest of the space of the mixed rabatka is filled with the help of grassy perennials placed in groups, contrasting with each other and revealing the color and stylistic concept of the entire mixborder. For compositions in mixed discounts in which roses dominate, the choice is best made from the classic companions for this shrub, hardy, unpretentious and universal in terms of their use in garden design. Magnificent sages, geraniums, bells, santolina, perovskia, catnip, veronica will be an excellent filling for a mixborder with royal soloists. The main thing is not to overdo it, but to create a feeling of richness of the presented details and textures.
