Terry sun in the garden
Spaniards from North America brought sunflower to Europe at the beginning of the 16th century. Then it was a little like the powerful single-stem plant known to everyone today with one flower basket at the top, sometimes reaching half a meter in diameter. A Europeans bush appeared with a height of 2-3 m with many stems, on the tops of which there were equally numerous small (2-3 cm in size) flowers of light orange color.
Florists were engaged in improving the decorative properties of sunflower, and terry, semi-double, dahlia and chrysanthemum-like forms of flowers of different colors appeared - from almost white to cherry red. Of the perennial species, ten-petalled sunflower is the most decorative today.
I liked the many-year-old variety of sunflower, which bloomed with a neighbor throughout the second half of the summer. In the fall, I asked her for pieces of rhizome and planted them, buried 3-4 cm in the soil. With the onset of cold weather, I covered the bushes with humus mixed with sawdust. Early in the spring, the mulching material was raked and fed by the awakening sprouts with mullein diluted with water in a ratio of 1:10.
The plants grew well and formed 8-10 inflorescences by the middle of summer, which bloomed at the same time. The plants themselves were not high - up to 50 cm, but they formed a lot of lateral shoots. If you grow terry sunflower through seeds, then you need to thin out the sprouts, at least after 45-50 cm, painfully they grow. But how pleasant it is to look at the golden-yellow terry caps of inflorescences, although they are, of course, smaller than that of an annual sunflower, and the seeds form poorly in our conditions.
Some bushes during the period of prolonged rains were affected by bacteriosis, their leaves had an untidy appearance, but the stems were stable until the end of the growing season. I tried to leave some inflorescences on the seeds, but now I understand that this was not worth doing. The seeds still did not ripen, and the decorativeness of the bushes decreased markedly. In order for the undersized sunflower to always have a beautiful view, it is necessary to remove faded flowers and diseased leaves in a timely manner. Its care is the same as that of ordinary sunflower: twice a season it is necessary to feed with diluted mullein with the addition of 20 g of potassium sulfate to a bucket of water. At the end of the growing season, after repeated frosts, the plants need to be cut at a height of 5-7 cm from the ground (the upper part can be laid in compost). After 3-4 years, the bushes will grow significantly, and then they must be divided, otherwise the flowers will be smaller. And yet, perennial sunflower is very fond of sunny areas where it forms flowers faster and blooms for a long time.
