Hero of the Garden - Juniper
Juniper is an amazing plant. In nature, its various forms are known - columnar (they have a height of several meters), medium (spreading bushes), ground cover (creeping on the ground). Bulbous and rhododendrons will become good neighbors for them. Compositions of junipers of different varieties will also look great, as there are plants that change the color of the crown depending on the time of year.
Variety ‘Andorra Compacta ’ spring needles bright green. In summer, the needles become muffled green, in autumn - brownish, in winter - brownish-purple. Very beautiful tall spreading variety ‘Blue Alps ’which has silver-blue needles. Medium Grade ‘Old Gold ’ possesses a bronze-yellow crown. Attractive juniper creeping on the ground "Variegata". A grade ‘Skyrocket ’ stands out for its tall and narrow crown.
When choosing a seedling to plant on the site, give preference to a plant grown in a container. All forms of junipers tolerate transplantation very poorly, so it is better to plant with a lump of earth, such instances take root better. Carefully inspect the selected seedling. Its branches should be fresh, not damaged. The earthen lump must be braided by the roots and completely fill the container. Such a plant, when planted, will grow beautifully.
The place for planting junipers must be chosen sunny, ventilated, with lightly moistened ground. They dig a landing hole twice as deep as an earthen coma with roots. The mixture for planting can be purchased at the store, or you can cook it yourself. To do this, mix peat, turf land and sand (2: 1: 1). Nitroammophosk is added to this composition. If the soil is heavy loamy and moist in the area, it is recommended to drainage with a layer of 15-20 cm from broken brick and sand.
Junipers are planted so that an earthen lump with roots is 10 cm above the soil level. The planted plant is well watered, but in no case trample the earth around it. She will settle herself, and the seedling will be at the required level. The trunk circle is mulched with bark, peat, humus or mowed grass. A 10 cm layer of mulch will prevent moisture loss, protect the roots of the plant from frost in the cold season and from overheating in the summer heat, and prevent weeds from growing. On top of that, the ground in the pit will remain loose, which is so necessary for junipers.
In the future, care consists in regular watering and spraying. This procedure must be done carefully so that under the pressure of water does not damage the branches. The best time for this is early morning or late evening. In the summer heat, junipers must be shaded. Like all conifers, these plants are often burned. For winter, the colon-shaped forms are recommended to be tied with a rope so that the appearance is not damaged under the weight of the snow. You can protect plants from the bright spring sun by covering them with spruce branches or lutrasil.
In early spring, carefully inspect the bushes, remove dry branches, as well as side branches that go beyond the boundaries of the formed crown. In summer, the creeping forms of plants and junipers, of which the hedge consists, are cut. Bonsai are sheared twice a year - during April-May and October-November.
Plant junipers on the plot and you will be sure to make the right choice. Having correctly picked the varieties and unmistakably arranging them among themselves or with other plants, junipers will become real heroes of the garden.
