For more than 200 years in different countries, this unpretentious, low, graceful shrub with plentiful, rather large fruits that literally cover the entire bush and hold almost until spring has been used to decorate sites. Actually, the shrub received its Latin name for the arrangement of fruits on the branches. Gender name Symphoricarpos consists of two words - symphorein, which means born nearby, or fused, and carpos - the fruit. And now the more lyrical name - the snow-berry, by which he is known everywhere, arose thanks to the white color of the fruit, as if covering the bushes with snow.
True, the name “snow-berry” has extended even to those species of the genus Symphoricarpos that have fruits that are not snow-white, but red. One of them is quite widespread in Western Europe, in our country it is little known. it rounded snowman, or ordinary (Symphoricarpos orbiculatus) At home, in North America, it is called Indian currant, coral berry.
This is a fairly tall shrub with thin shoots, small leaves, dark green above and bluish below. The flowers are as small as those of white, and collected in dense short inflorescences. Fruits are hemispherical, purplish-red or coral, with a bluish bloom. In the autumn, this shrub is also very beautiful - thin shoots with purple leaves are strewn with red fruits along the entire length. The rounded snow-berry is somewhat less winter-hardy than white, however, in the middle zone of the European part of Russia it may well grow.
But the most widespread was precisely snow berry whiteor carpal (Symphoricarpos albus), more precisely, its special form with large up to 1.5 cm white fruits in spike-like or racemose fruit-trees - clusters at the ends of shoots. Under the weight of closely sitting plentiful fruits, thin shoots bend in an arcuate shape, giving elegance to the bush. The white snow-berry reaches 1.5-1.7 m in height, blooms quite early in the spring, leaves are 3-7 cm long, light green, slightly lobed. Flowering is continuous, continuous from July to September. It should be noted that the bush is not decorated with flowers, although numerous, but small, but with fruits.
In the culture, other types of snow-berries with white fruits are also known, but they have no decorative advantages over white. On the contrary, their fruitfulness consists of fewer fruits; some species are less hardy.
Snowman is unpretentious. They can grow on stony, calcareous soils, in partial shade, do not require watering. They tolerate pruning well, after which they quickly grow back. Thanks to the root offspring, they gradually form dense large groups. In horticulture, snow-breeders are very useful, as they are good honey plants. In combination with tall bushes or trees with dark green foliage, with conifers, they form beautiful contrasting groups. From them you can create a dense and elegant hedge, make a border.
Propagation of the snowman by cuttings, offspring, division of bushes. It is very simple to grow them from seeds. Immediately after harvesting in the fall, seeds are sown directly in the ground or in pots and boxes. Close up not deep, sprinkle on top of the crops with sawdust, a dry leaf. Boxes and pots are left for the winter under the snow.
Shoots appear in the spring, in some cases - after a year. In the early years, the snowman grows rapidly, in the third year - up to 90 cm - 1 m and begins to bloom.
Snowman is one of the most smoke and gas resistant plants.
