Rod Lantana (Lantana) unites more than 150 species of evergreen shrubs, of which two are usually grown for decorative purposes. Plants have opposite hard leaves, pubescent, sometimes spiny shoots. The flowers are small, fragrant, collected in umbrellas or dense apical or axillary scutes. The calyx is small, the corolla is tubular; it is slightly unevenly divided into perianth lobes. The fruit is fleshy, in the pulp 2 seeds.
The most common form is Lantana camara (Lantana camara), orLantana vaulted with spiny stems and dark green oval or heart-shaped leaves on long petioles, serrated along the edge. On the upper side they are rough, pubescent on the lower, with an unpleasant odor.
Camara lanthanum flowers, collected in axillary corymbose inflorescences, tubular, gradually changing color from yellow or pink to red or orange. In a certain period of time, the inflorescence is painted in all colors at once. Flowering from May to August. Of the varieties most effective:
- Cloud of gold with yellow flowers of intense color;
- Pink queen with salmon yellow in buds and then pink flowers;
- The Snow Queen and Snowy with white flowers;
- Spreading sunset - creeping form with flowers painted in tones from yellow to reddish.
Lantana Montevidea (Lantana montevidensis), she is Lantana Selloviana (Lantana selloviana) Is a climbing view with ovate leaves covered with gentle pubescence, serrated along the edge. The flowers are tiny tubular lilac-pink with a yellow core, collected in compact spherical inflorescences; bloom for a long time: from June to October-November.
Location: Plants prefer a warm, sunny location protected from the wind.
The soil: Lanthanum requires nutritious, air- and water-permeable soils.
Care: water lanthanum regularly, avoiding waterlogging of the soil. To stimulate repeated flowering, wilted flowers are removed in time, preventing the formation of fruits. It is necessary to feed the plants with a solution of complete mineral fertilizer every 4 weeks, and on poor soils - every 2 weeks.
Using: Lantana flowering bushes will adorn the balcony and terrace from May to October. But on one condition: provide her with maximum light. In the bright sun, the bush will grow more compact and bloom profusely and continuously.
Lantana looks great against the background of fuchsia, pelargonium, geraniums and heliotrope, but I like it when she solo and do not distract from immersion in her solar magic. Lantana can be kept even as a summer seasonal plant, then it will gladly refresh your flower garden, which, of course, should be in the sun.
With the methods of forming lanthanum, you can safely experiment: both the fluffy bush, and the standard tree, and the ampule plant are successful.
Fans of winter gardens in autumn bring the plant from the street to the greenhouses and set it in a bright place with a temperature of about 6-10 ° C. At this time, the plant is watered very moderately. Under such conditions, the content of lanthanum does not drop leaves. In spring, the shoots are cut to 1/3 and the lanthanum begins to form new shoots and soon blooms.
After a dormant period, the plant develops very quickly. When the first autumn frosts begin, lanthanum is still strewn with colorful inflorescences. At this time, you can cut its branches into cuttings or bring it into the room, however, most gardeners prefer to buy new planting material for the next season.
Lantana has only one minus - it is very much loved by whiteflies (spider mites, aphids, mealybugs rarely infect plants). However, spring and autumn treatment with a wide range of insecticides is quite enough to protect lantana from this scourge for the whole season.
Partners: goes well with heliotrope, marigolds and chamomile.
Warning: the fruits of lanthanum are poisonous!
Lantana is propagated by winter cuttings and sometimes by seeds.
Sowing Lanthanum Seeds
Lanthanum seeds are sold primarily as mixtures, but not all varieties. Sowing is carried out from January to March in boxes with loose substrate, which are placed in a bright room with a temperature of at least 20 degrees. Lanthanum seedlings appear after 1-2 weeks. When the seedlings reach a height of 10 cm, they dive and gradually lower the air temperature.
Cuttings of lanthanum
For vegetative propagation from February to March, apical cuttings about 10 cm long are cut from overwintered mother plants. Lanthanum cuttings are rooted in flower pots with a loose moist substrate, maintaining a temperature of about 20 degrees. After 3-4 weeks, the temperature is gradually reduced to 12 degrees.
To get compact plants, they are repeatedly pinched. The tops of shoots remaining after pinching can be used as cuttings.
Young specimens of lanthanum look like herbaceous plants. They grow better and bloom faster than old perennial bushes. Acquired young plants need to be transplanted into large pots or flower beds at a distance of 30 cm from each other, where they will soon form small bushes about 50 cm high. They will bloom continuously for a long time, attracting swarms of insects.
Types of Lanthanum
Lantana camara (Lantana camara)
This plant is a native of South America, acclimatized in many tropical and subtropical regions of our planet. In some places, it even gives people great inconvenience. In countries with a temperate climate, this thermophilic shrub freezes in winter.
The beautiful inflorescences of Kamara lantana are striking in their multicolor: individual flowers of which they are composed change color depending on the degree of maturation. At first they are orange or yellow, then they turn dark red or pink. Garden form "Aloha" has recently become increasingly popular.
She has soft drooping shoots, so she looks very good in containers and hanging baskets. It can also be planted on flower beds, especially in combination with plants with grayish-silver or bluish foliage. Its flowers are light yellow, and the leaves are mottled. At the формы Goldsonne ’garden form, the shoots are creeping and the flowers are lemon yellow.
Lantana montevideans (Lantana montevidensis)
Occasionally, not only the well-known Lantana camara can be found on sale, but also other exotic species. Among them is Lantana of Montevidea (Lantana montevidensis), which seems to be specially designed for placement in containers and hanging baskets. She has very flexible creeping shoots, which almost immediately after planting take on an ampel shape.
This type of lanthanum has smaller leaves, and the petioles are shorter than that of camant lanthanum. Inflorescences with a diameter of several centimeters are usually painted in lilac pink and purple. Recently, new interesting cultural forms with white and yellow flowers have appeared.
Diseases and pests of lanthanum
Species and varieties of lanthanum are susceptible to some fungal diseases, as a result of which spotting, rust, leaves fade. But these diseases are mostly local and chemical treatment is not required. On potted specimens of lanthanum, aphids and mealybugs are common, against which plants are treated with appropriate preparations.
Whiteflies, sucking juice from leaves, do the most harm. In this case, the plant is sequentially treated with a suitable insecticide at short intervals (every 2-3 days for 1-2 weeks).
